Looking to hire a SEO Consultant?

The DMU's largest group of members are the SEO Consultants. An incredible bunch of people working on all manner of different websites. From helping startups with their first visitors to managing enterprise level clients with an international footprint.

Here's what we're most often asked by brands looking to hire an SEO Consultant...

What does a SEO Consultant do exactly?

The job of an SEO consultant is to deliver relevant leads and sales by increasing the quality and quantity of organic visitors from Google and other search engines. They are separate from PPC consultants who focus on paid visitors from Google. Typically you can expect an SEO Consultant to:

  • Identify and fix SEO issues on an underperforming website

  • Work collaboratively with other teams to improve the performance of a website in line with business goals

  • Maintain and adjust a website in line with the ever-changing algorithms used by search engines

  • Report on the performance of the investment in SEO and assess the financial risks and rewards from undertaking different SEO activities

What channels do SEO Consultants work on?

The vast majority of SEO consultants will be experienced in optimising websites for Google and to a lesser extent Bing. Only a few specialists in the UK market will offer SEO services for search engines used in other territories such as Yankdex or Baidu.

Within SEO, there are several further sub-disciplines. Some consultants will offer a holitisc service covering all of the following items. Other consultants will have a single area of focus. An experienced SEO consultant will cover the following areas:

  • Onsite SEO: Focusses on the elements which make up a webpage (specifically the copy, images, links and meta data) in order for a page to be found and correctly indexed

  • Offsite SEO: Focussed on links and other signals on other websites which influence the ranking position of a target website

  • Technical SEO: Focusses on the code of a website ensuring it is fast, well structured and available for Google to access it

  • Local SEO: Focusses on ensuring a business appears in the Google My Business listings. Only relevant to websites which a specific local presence

  • Content Marketing: Focussed on the copy, video and other tools which are used to attract people to a website through non-commercial search terms (e.g 'best holiday destinations 2024'

  • International SEO: Focusses on ensuring the right content on a website is shown in the right languages and right territories. Only relevant to websites which have a international presence

How much do SEO consultants charge?

Prices for SEO vary hugely but in our experience the absolute minimum you would expect to pay for a UK consultant is £600/month with some of the highest fees approaching £5000/month.

Prices are typically based on the size and complexity of the website you want the consultant to work on, the brands objectives for what they want to accompish and the current performance of the website.

Prices are typically charged for on a monthly retainer agreement. SEO takes months if not years to provide a meaningful uptick in organic traffic so the price is seen as an investment and long term commitment. You should expect different prices for SEO Audits, Strategies and Training. Pricing for a specific project can also be expected if a specific challenge arises (such as a website migration).

In addition to the cost of hiring an SEO consultant you will also need additional budget (or have people in place) who are able to provide copywriting, analytics and web development services. SEO is a multi-disciplinary activity and changes to the website which are recommended by a consultant will involve other specialists.
